Kickboxing is a modern martial sport that combines the hand techniques of Western boxing with the kicks of the Asian martial arts. Although it can be used for self-defense, it\'s primarily a ring sport. Boxing or kickboxing based workouts are proven to burn more calories per hour than just about any other form of exercise. Classes will teach you the art of kicking and punching. Students will learn defensive movement and proper kicking and punching techniques using heavy bags and punching mitts
MUAY THAI OR THAI BOXING
Muay Thai is a martial art from Thailand. It\'s renowned for its overall simplicity and practicality: powerful roundhouse kicks, elbow strikes, knee thrusts and basic boxing-style punches. Although muay Thai is primarily practiced as a ring sport—mostly by teenage boys in Thailand—it has numerous self-defense applications. The sport version has been popular in Thailand for decades, and it has spread to Japan, the United States and Europe.
BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU (BJJ)
BJJ is a martial art and combat sport that teaches a smaller person how to defend himself against a larger adversary by using leverage and proper technique. The Gracie family, the founders of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, modified judo and traditional Japanese jujutsu to create the art. It contains stand-up maneuvers, but it is most famous for its devastating ground-fighting techniques. Gaining superior positioning so one can apply the style\'s numerous chokes, holds, locks and joint manipulations on an opponent is the key in Brazlian jiu-jitsu.
MIXED MARTIAL ARTS (MMA)
MMA incorporate three basic skills—striking, grappling and wrestling—mainly for the purpose of full-contact competitions with varying rules. MMA is also known as no-holds-barred fighting, vale tudo (Portuguese for anything goes), Ultimate Fighting and cage fighting.Because boxing, kickboxing and muay Thai only involve fighting on the feet, no ground skills are necessary. Likewise, because striking is not allowed in wrestling matches or grappling, these skills are left out of the training regimen of such athletes.
As the name implies, MMA incorporates all the skills necessary for a fight on any level. A fighter not well versed in the ground game must at least develop a good sprawl or takedown defense. He must also know how to defend against typical ground submission holds long enough to get back on his feet. Those skilled at Brazilian jui-jitsu or Greco-Roman wrestling must be able to evade a strikers attack long enough to take him down to where they are comfortable. Thus, the goal for any MMA competitor is to develop a well-rounded skill set that can simultaneously showcase his primary strength and downplay the weakness of his lesser abilities.
WRESTLING
Wrestling is a combative sport that probably originated in ancient Greece and Rome. It\'s practiced in various forms in most cultures of the world (sumo in Japan, ssirum in Korea, khok in Armenia, sambo in Russia, etc.). It formed the basis for the Japanese martial sport of shootfighting, and many of its techniques are similar to those of judo. Wrestling is playing an increasingly important role in the training of mixed martial artists.
